Sumber utama penulisan buku ini adalah Karni Ilyas sendiri. Berita ekslusif pertama yang dibuat Karni sebagai reporter misalnya, terjadi pada pertengahan tahun 1973, bukan akhir tahun 1972 seperti yang diceritakannya. Sayang sekali puisi Karni yang dimuat di Haluan antara bulan Mei 1969 hingga Desember 1971 tidak ditemukan, baik dikoran tersebut maupun di Perpustakaan Nasional di Jakarta.
