Aldous huxley A biography : the apparent stability volume one
The object of this book is to give a truthful and coherent account of the life of Aldous Huxley and of Aldous Huxley as a man. Although it is no way intended as a work of literary criticism or an evaluation of his thought, such a book must quite inevitably -contain a good deal of his writing and his thought. Naturally I feel presumptuous in attempting the biography of a man of his moral and intellectual quality. I was persuaded by the nearest members of his family, his widow, his brother, his son; I finally accepted because my own fondness for Aldous made me want to do it. (There was perhaps, as well, some element of personal logic: because when I was young and everything seemed easy, I had lightly thought that one day I might do precisely this.) If the work was a labour of love, it was also work done in a spirit of detachment. I have been entirely candid to the best of my knowledge and ability-about everything concerning Aldous Huxley's character and actions. And although this principle had to be moderated-very occasionally-when writing about people now living, the rule which, throughout, I set before me was a dictum of the late Desmond MacCarthy's: A biographer is an artist upon oath. saif/16/01/2025
