Indonesia a traveler’s guide :Java and Sumatra
Indonesia' is a name coined in 1850 by James Richardson Logan, publisher of the Journal of the Indian Archipelago and Eastern Asia, and is generally understood to have covered at that time the East Indies ruled by the Netherlands, islands estimated to total from three thousand to thirteen thousand in otherwise reputable geographies, so the myth and illusion surrounding so much of the nation's past can be seen to plague the present too. This fifth most populous nation of the world (after Bangla Desh split from West Pakistan) has about 125,000,000 inhabitants. The land area of this tenth largest nation is 735,865 square miles. And by natural wealth, Indonesia is currently ranked third after the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R.rnrnIndonesia is divided into twenty-six provinces: five on Java, eight on Sumatra, four on Kalimantan, four on Sulawesi, three comprising the Lesser Sunda archipelago (Bali, West and East Nusa Nenggara), the Moluccas and West Irian. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language.
