Asia, east by south :A cultural geography
This volume is concerned with cultural geog- raphy in its widest interpretation. Most of the materials with which cultural geographers must deal are tangible and can be viewed in terms of regional distribution and analysis. These tangibles form the primary contexts of discussion throughout the book. Beyond them, however, there are important but less tangible characteristics of peoples and places that are important to an understanding of the ways of different men in separate sectors of the earth's landscapes. There can be no finite limit placed upon the variety of data with which regional geographers must deal in depicting human life in chosen regional landscapes. Regional cultural geography is the study of the outcome of culture groups living in, and doing things to, particular spatial units of the earth. In regions where many generations of people have lived, both living systems and their landscapes are cumulative developments so that it is incum- bent upon regional geographers not only to describe present conditions but also to de- scribe the processes by which these regions came to be what they are today.
