The making of the Romanian people and language
The growth of the Romanian people in the Carpatho- Danubian area and its continuity in this area is a process similar to the growth and continuity of the other Romance European peoples: the French, Italians, Spaniards and Portuguese. With all these peoples we see first a basic ethnic element: the Gauls in France, the Celtiberians in Spain and and Portugal, the Gauls in the north and the Etruscans in the centre of Italy. In the case of the Romanians there were the Dacians or Getae, the northern branch of the Thracians. Over these autochthonous elements there came the Roman colonists, bringing along with them the Latin language of the people, and Roman civilization and culture. These colonists assimilated within a variable period of time, depend- ing on the circumstances and the number of colonists, the basic, autochthonous element, giving birth to new ethnic syntheses: the Gallo-Romans of Gaul, the Daco-Romans of the Carpatho-Danubian area, the Ibero-Romans of Spain and Portugal and the Romans of Italy. The above ethnical syntheses were subject to the action of the migrating elements: Germanic in Western Europe and Italy, Slavic in South-Eastern Europe. Thus, the Franks - who 7 gave their name to the French people together.
