Readings in economic geography
World economic geography is taking on new sig- nificance in the modern age Premodern man's concern with situation and habitat was mainly local, but modern man's concern is more and more world- wide. The pressure of world communism for he- gemony, the pressure exerted by underdeveloped societies to develop their own political and eco- nomic overlordship, the pressure of dynamic science and technology leading to a need for larger-scale sources of materials and larger markets, and many other trends in this increasingly urban-industrialized world inevitably mean that the search for political security, economic progress, and social justice must increasingly be viewed within a world-wide context. rnrnEconomic geography therefore can be an increas- ingly important part of the modern student's educa- tion. As the number of courses in this field ex- pands, there is need for a broader outlook and understanding. This suggests, in turn, a need to supplement the standard content of the typical course with an adequate but manageable selection of related readings.
