like so many other books,this too started out as quite another one. some of the thoughts contained in these pages began in my attempts to teach and to erite about american social and cultural history in general and the american frontier in particular. the spesific impetus was an attempt to write an introduce section for a social interpretation of american history i felt i had to provide some theoretical umderpinnings for what i hoped would be an example of the so called new history the introduction soon grew to this book length essay
