The secret life of wilkie collins
A large part of this book has been based on the willingness of a dozen or so individuals to cooperate in recalling memories and in providing factual information. The prime supporters were naturally the late 'Bobbie' (Dawson) West and Lionel Dawson, Wilkie Collins's two grandchildren. They understood, better than most, the sensitivities of their two aunts (Wilkie's two daughters), yet they never hesitated in their support and enthusiasm for the project. They saw and approved the early drafts before their untimely deaths last year. It is a personal sadness that they did not live to see the completed work.rnrnBeyond Wilkie's immediate family, I have relied extensively on the descendants of Martha Rudd, Caroline Graves and Henry Bartley (Collins's solicitor), especially Edie Upton in Eastbourne, Rody and Ronald Iredale in Mitcham, Laura and the late Geoffrey Gregson in Maidenhead and Walter Rudd in Winterton. Others deserving my special thanks (mentioned in more detail in the Preface) include Donald Whitton in San Francisco, Bridget Lakin and Emma Hicks in London and Pamela Holding in Naples.
