Sources of western civilization
THIS BOOK of readings is primarily designed for use in survey courses in European or Western civilization, though it should also prove usable in other types of courses (not necessarily in history) that focus on source documents. It originated in the twofold conviction (1) that students should be given an opportunity to see how subsequent his- torical accounts are based on earlier documentary sources, and (2) that direct contact, through such sources, with great minds and move- ments of history most effectively begets understanding and stimulates thought.rnrnUVIDrnrn2.rnrnMost teachers find that a survey text is indispensable for providing continuity of narrative and a framework for ordering the place of mer and movements, events and ideas, in relation to one another and to the whole picture. Some general knowledge of any historical time- slice is normally required before one can properly appreciate or fully understand its components. How, then, reconcile the need for a text with the desirability of some acquaintance with sources? Since it is unrealistic in these days of large enrollments to expect that the problem of supplementary reading can be wholly solved through the library, an obvious compromise is a selection of appropriate readings in inexpensive paperback form, designed to supplement and enrich the required textbook assignments.
