The origins of chinese kongsi
Certainly in mining this piece of history, which is little known if compared with the story of western democracy, I owe a great many intellectual debts to those who have helped me.rnrnFirst of all, I am indebted to Professor Wang Gungwu, not only for his useful advice in the field of Chinese and overseas Chinese history, but much more for his almost intuitive sense of terminology and the theoretical framework, which helped me to lay the foundation of this work. Equipped with an overall view, I was able to go deeper and deeper into the origins of Chinese kongsi which even now still lie off the beaten track of most of the historians.rnrnSecondly, I am equally grateful to Dr Anthony Reid who paid special attention to the structure and detail of this book. The attention brought me to almost every single aspect of the life of the men of kongsis, not just their government in evolution, but also their desires of earthly bliss, as towkays as well as coolies. If history is a conversation with the past, the voice from her is life.
