A world atlas of military history
For twenty years I have been fighting to impress upon publishers, authors and cartographical draughtsmen the need and value of clear maps in text-books. I became an historical carto- grapher largely because so many of the maps I saw in books and atlases were difficult to under- stand. Maps are visual aids: they do not supersede text-books. What are required are simple, clear drawings that one can assimilate with ease.rnrnThe greatest drawback to historical maps is that historians are not usually good draughtsmen and cartographers are not usually well-read in history. Furthermore, there is an important difference between a cartographer (who can devise and plan a map) and a cartographical draughts- man who can only draw the final result from a cartographer's draft. And whereas authors obviously want as many maps as possible in their books, publishers try to keep these to a minimum for economic reasons.rnrnThis atlas is an attempt to produce a book of clear and simple maps printed in black and grey with a 'story' line attached. One cannot satisfy everyone's requirements within 154 pages and I can only hope that it proves useful and informative to the reader. In this opening volume I have included 'general' maps in addition to 'war' maps since one cannot readily grasp military campaigns in early times unless one has a background map to assist one.
