This publication contains the papers which were presented at the international workshop on Applied Toponymy held at Cipanas, Indonesia from 16-28 October 1989. The workshop had been recom- mended by the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) and was primarily intended for participants from SE Asia and the SW Pacific. It was organized by Bakosurtanal, the National Coordination Agency for Surveys and Mapping in Indonesia in cooperation with the ITC, Netherlands. It was attended by some 50 participants, predominantly from Indonesian government agencies and institutions involved in geographical name problems.
