Korea’s heritage : regional and sosial geography
Korea, 85,000 square miles in area, is only a small segment of this world's surface. The thirty million Koreans are only a small portion of this world's people. Yet this peninsula is of great importance in these days of international tension. Knowledge of Korea's geographic position, character, and diversity is needed if sound decisions are to be made concern- ing this strategic area. It is the aim of this book to present this geographic knowledge the heritage of Korea.rnrnNaturally, as one who was born in Korea and who spent his boyhood there, I have certain prejudices; to me, Korea is a land of beauty and the Korean people are likeable and have many fine qualities. Field research in Korea and study of available literature has convinced me that the role of geo- graphy, though a silent role, is extremely important in the lives of the Koreans, living as they do close to their land. This book may reveal my prejudices; it purposely stresses the geo- graphic factors which are too often neglected. In the discussion of Korea a regional approach is employed, for by understanding the parts a person can better understand the whole of Korea's geographic character.
