The earliest printed maps
The present volume is a new work describing, with a few exceptions, the 15th-century printed maps listed in the catalogue published for the International Geographical Union in 1952. It was prepared under the auspices of the Commission for the Inventory of Early Maps, created at the 1931 International Geographical Congress, in Paris, under the presidency of Professor Roberto Almagia. The Commission's mandate was renewed at the 1934 and 1938 Congresses; at the 1949 Congress, in Lisbon, it was renamed Commission on Early Maps, and it continued its work until the 1964 Congress, held in London. At that time, the Commission being presided over by R.A. Skelton, it was transformed into the Working Group on Early Maps of the International Geographical Union. After R.A. Skelton's untimely death, the Group was led by G.R. Crone, its principal task was to compile the present catalogue.rnrnThe labors of the Working Group were made possible by a generous grant-in-aid, provided jointly by five American libraries: the James Ford Bell Collection at the University of Minnesota Library, the Library of the University of Kansas, the William L. Clements Library of the University of Michigan, the Newberry Library, and the Library of the University of Virginia. The author of the present volume, and the members of the Working Group wish to express their profound gratitude to these institutions for their support.
