It shares the island of Timor (or Timur) with Indonesia, occupying halft of the island's 30,000 square kilometres. Its 650.000 inhabitants are predominantly of proto-Malay stock with a Melanesian admixture. Intermarriage with Portuguese traders, soldiers, administrators, and deportees has resulted in a significant number of half-caste Black Portuguese" who tend to live in urban areas and enjoy higher status than pure Timorese."
