Trade and empire in Malaya and Singapore 1869-1874
The introduction of the Resident System into Malaya and the initiation of indirect rule in the Malay States beginning with the Pangkor Agreement in 1874 was a turning point in the relations between Britain and the future State of Malaysia. It is the aim of Professor SarDesai to show the importance of the roles played by British traders in Singapore, fearful of foreign trading competition and cognizant of the importance of control over the Straits of Malacca, in the decision by the British Government to intervene in the internal affairs of the Malay States which, up to that time, had been free of European interference.
