A survey of historical source materials in Java and Manila
This survey report on historical source materials in Java and in the Manila area of Luzon is a portion of the research made possible by a Fulbright-Hays grant for the academic year 1968-1969. Underlying the surveying and writing of this report are four assump tions. First, that it is desirable, even necessary, to write endogenous history of Southeast Asian nations, localities, and institutions. Second, that such history must be based upon examination and evaluation of local, specific facets of information which will produce specialized monographs and arti- cles. Third, that the methods of the historian require the use of empirical data in the form of either written or oral reports. And fourth, that some first-hand information on the varieties of written materials available could be helpful, per- haps even inspirational, for the future work of historians as well as scholars in other disciplines
